Identifying Anxiety SymptomsJanuary 15, 2010 on 2:12 am | In Health | No CommentsA person experiencing their first anxiety symptoms can think they’re having a heart attack. Someone calls an ambulance, they are taken to Accident and Emergency, and after the usual tests they are told that it’s panic. The most common reactions to this news are embarrassment and disbelief, but at least they’ve been seen by a doctor and can start the process of coming to terms with what has happened to them. At the other end of the scale; some people live with their anxiety attacks for years without having it properly diagnosed, without talking to anyone about it and without getting any help. Seeing the doctor Quite simply, everyone needs to see a doctor to discuss their anxiety symptoms and get a diagnosis. There are a few physical illnesses whose symptoms are just like Anxiety so you need to make sure that you’re not suffering from one of those. There is no point in reading this article and doing the work we suggest if, for instance, you are suffering from a thyroid problem that can be treated by tablets. So if you haven’t seen your doctor yet, now is the time to do so. If you are nervous about doing this, consider taking someone sympathetic along with you for support. If you are housebound, ask for a home visit. The important thing to remember is, that if it turns out you do have an Anxiety disorder, it is an illness and it is not your fault, so you really don’t need to be embarrassed. We probably have a higher level of background anxiety (which we may or may not be aware of), we have the worry about when, where and how we might have the next attack, what are the causes of anxiety attacks, and we also have the anxiety about reading our body’s signals. As a result you may find yourself saying ‘What if…?’ a lot of the time. ‘What if I have an attack in the middle of that meeting?’ ‘What if I feel funny at the bus stop?’ ‘What if I have a turn and embarrass my partner in front of everyone?’ ‘What if… What if… What if…?’ With all those thoughts and worries about anxiety attacks going around in your head, perhaps without you being fully aware of them, it is hardly surprising to find that you are less relaxed than you could be. Stop to pause for a second - now. Are your shoulders relaxed, or are they tensed and up by your ears somewhere? What’s happening with your forehead? Is it smooth and calm, or furrowed and frowning? And how is your jaw? Clenched and taut or relaxed and free? If you feel anxious and concerned about all those ‘What ifs’, then your body will respond accordingly. If you sit and watch a comedy program on television, your body responds and you start to laugh. If you sit down and worry, your body also responds, but this time by becoming taut and strained.
