We probably have a higher level of background anxiety (which we may or may not be aware of), we have the worry about when, where and how we might have the next attack, what are the causes of anxiety attacks, and we also have the anxiety about reading our body’s signals. As a result you may find yourself saying ‘What if…?’ a lot of the time. ‘What if I have an attack in the middle of that meeting?’ ‘What if I feel funny at the bus stop?’ ‘What if I have a turn and embarrass my partner in front of everyone?’ ‘What if… What if… What if…?’ With all those thoughts and worries about anxiety attacks going around in your head, perhaps without you being fully aware of them, it is hardly surprising to find that you are less relaxed than you could be. Stop to pause for a second - now. Are your shoulders relaxed, or are they tensed and up by your ears somewhere? What’s happening with your forehead? Is it smooth and calm, or furrowed and frowning? And how is your jaw? Clenched and taut or relaxed and free? If you feel anxious and concerned about all those ‘What ifs’, then your body will respond accordingly. If you sit and watch a comedy program on television, your body responds and you start to laugh. If you sit down and worry, your body also responds, but this time by becoming taut and strained.
